The Dibbuk

Set in a Jewish community in Eastern Europe, O Dibuk, or “Entre dois Mundos” [Between Two Worlds], by Schalon An-Ski, tells the story of the difficult love affair of two young people from socially different situations: Lea, daughter of a rich Hasidin and Hanan, a young student who is being initiated in the mysteries of the Cabala. The play evolves between the visible world and the invisible, proposing reflection on the soul and its destiny.

Written in Russia in 1911, the play concerns an eternal universal theme and is impregnated with the legends and beliefs of Hasidism, a mystic movement founded by Baal Shem Tov in the XIX century. Hasidism focused on the ardour and simplicity of the religious sentiment, and was propagated amidst a population marked by poverty and persecution.

Directed by Stephane Brodt and Ana Teixeira in 2000, O Dibuk is the result of the encounter of this universe with a group of actors from the Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro. This old world, which has already disappeared, offered a fertile field for approach to the theatrical space and lead the activity as far as the frontier between dream and reality. The play uses traditional masks from the Balinese theatre, sculpted by Ida Bagus Oka, Ida Bagus Anom and I Nyoman Setiawan.

“Dibuk” is the name of the errant soul of a dead person. In certain circumstances, a Dibuk penetrates the body of a living person. The Dibuk that is manifested in the chosen body with the voice of the deceased, is a grave danger for the host, and has to be expelled by means of exorcistic practices.
