Based on the homonymous work by Laurent Gaudé, Furacão presents Joséphine Linc Steelson, “a nearly one-hundred-year-old Black woman” who faces the fury of Hurricane Katrina alone, the hurricane that devastated the southern United States in 2005. A woman marked by racial segregation, whose voice echoes like a cry in the flooded and abandoned city left to its own fate. Furacão is about Katrina and its victims, but above all, it is about the weight of inequality in times of tragedy.
In this production, theater and music merge into a single act, creating a whirlwind that intertwines Katrina, climate change, and the anti-segregation movement. The rich tradition of Black American music—particularly the blues—serves as a foundation for crafting a hybrid stage language: the performance relies on both theater and music to celebrate the moving resilience of those who, despite everything, remain standing.
Hurricane received seven nominations at the APTR Awards, including Best Direction, Set Design, Lighting, Music, Lead Actress, Supporting Actress, and Best Production, winning awards for Best Music and Best Set Design.
"Nature can no longer bear our presence. It twists and contracts in anger."
